For me it's fine details in contrasting colours - usually the things that make a unit different, such as facing colours, elite company distinctions, vehicle markings, etc.

How do the soldiers feel? Do you paint civilians faces?

I like painting red. Its one of my favourite colours to paint even though most people hate it.
