The character development works well but it's a communal system. All the upgrade points go into a pot and you decide who gets what. Characters also advance through surviving games. In effect this means that you only pick upgrades that won't be overwritten when the fighter advances. I made everyone a bit quicker and pile the rest on my veterans.
Trading is the weakest part. The author has said that it was an afterthought. I'd impose some sort of budget on initial recruitment and standardise what a new recruits brings to the party.
