How long?
Re: How long?
Actually it's one bunch of Scottish religious fanatics beating up another bunch of Scottish religious fanatics...

Re: How long?
Must you bring history into this? Next you'll be telling me that the Warwickshire Regiment didn't sing Men of Harlech.

But, unusually, without the involvement of a football!
Or Bovril.

Re: How long?
As you point out, this is one of those games with an historical religious aspect. Both sides had a religious figure (minister & priest), for example, who could influence the morale of a given unit, with no doubt lurid references to heaven & hell & ludicrously contradictory appeals to "God is with us".
As two of us are Scots, the issue isn't entirely academic. I have Wee Free relatives, for example. That's not to say the game wasn't our usual somewhat irreverent & entertaining effort but it did have that slightly sobering under currant of the past & its impact on the present.
In our colonial Sudan games, the Mahdists (remarkably similar to ISIS, IMO) also have that tone. Imagine: wargaming can be educational!

(no Bovril, but we lunched with a cheeky Rose featuring).

Re: How long?
Looking at most people's idea of history, wargamers must learn a lot about it.

Hopefully there was also no defaecatory desecration of opposition footwear.

Re: How long?
Looks like a cracking setup. Montrose is a bit of a personal hero of mine, but both sides have their appeal. What rules are you using? I have a load of Warlord ECW plastics I have had a mind to convert into Scots, but I am not sure which rules to use.

Montrose, for all his faults, is so much more admirable than Archibald Campbell (one of my commanders) who was a reptile.Shahbahraz wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2020 8:42 pm Looks like a cracking setup. Field of Glory: Renaissance. Not everyone's glass of rose. They're a complex set that took me (using the Ancients' version) quite a while to learn but they give a game that IMO feels like the ECW.
A few notable points: artillery is amazingly useless. It moves little or not at all & rarely does any execution.
Units stand & fall according to 1. morale state (disrupted/fragmented/broken) & 2. number of bases (each unit has its own break point). This means, when things start to fall apart, they fall apart quickly.
Commanders don't have specific commands but can command anyone. I don't like this. Can you imagine some effete Lowlander ordering some Hielanders about?
Very hard to for either Scots' army to get any traction against the English (if you use the points-based system) simply because the Scots' cavalry is so poor compared to cavaliers or Ironsides. The best I can do with the Covenanters is to get a great defensive position & hide your cavalry within.
I'm not going to claim FoG is the only & best set of ECW rules. I think there are some very interesting ones out there.
