Are you sure they're not Baccus, Irregular, Heroics and Ros? Or are they just far away?

Those lancers look quite tall and chunky! Les Higgins are definitely too small to provide command figures for the Zvezda plastics. Of those three irregular look to be the best match but still a bit short, would you agree with that from having them in the 'flesh'?
From what I've seen elsewhere the Minifigs S series are the closest match all round to the Zvezdas.

Irregular are very small and they would definitely not work beside Zvezda. Les Higgins has the right 'heft' but they may be a little small. Lancer are certainly chunksters.

My remedy for lack of Zvezda command might be to use the slightly larger Lancer figures and hide them in the centre of the base, i.e. block the line of sight.

Strelets turned up today. French on the march. Very nice set of figures, no stupid poses all useable, 44 figures in the box so with a little creativity spreading out the command figures I can get two units from the one box. With postage this works out at sick squid for a unit!

EB's basing as above is both lucid and rational. I know no longer believe all the horrid things you say about him.

So after some base arranging it's clear the pose numbers are better suited to x4 in a row units but I can make it work, might just need another box or two. Definately need more command and better flag bearers.

Iain, which would be the most compatable and are they available as packs/singles?

These figures are 28mm and those are 20mm and far away...

Spray your soft plastic figures once painted with Plastidip Clear Spray. This lays down a flexible rubberised coating on your figures which can bend and flex with no danger (or hope) of paint loss

Is this instead of or in addition to varnish?
...and if the latter...which comes first?

Plastidip is your top coat Paul, instead of varnish. You don’t need to prepare the figures before painting but it’s still a good idea. Run them through the dishwasher, or water with washing up liquid; you can prime them with a thin coat of pva or use Liquitex, or spray with Rustoleum plastic primer: but the key thing is the Plastidip. Good luck with it
