Popular periods

I truly think I'm finished adding new periods to my collection of wargaming periods. I think I'm probably about average with these periods/armies:

Bronze Age (NKE, Hittites & Mycenaeans)

Punic Wars (Romans & Carthaginians)

Dark Ages (Saxons & Late Romans)

ECW (Covenanters & English Royalists)

SYW (French, Prussians & Austrians)

AZW (Zulus & British/Colonial forces)

Sudan (Mahdists & Anglo-Egyptian forces)

WW2 (Late war Brits, US & Germans)

The point I wish to raise is their popularity. My pals are always keen for a WW2 game. Napoleonics also gets an enthusiastic response. Some of the others, not so much.

Indeed, the Bronze Age, possibly my favourite period, is rather lukewarmly greeted by our group.

From our last BA battle, about 18 months ago:

Undoubtedly, it my fascination with the literature & archaeology of the period.

So what makes a popular period for you to game & why?

Chilean war of Independence. A war for an enormous area fought by forces of reinforced brigade to weak division sized armies, with Spanish sartorial elegance. What's not to like?

Guerra del Pacifico. Similar sized battles using Pranco Frussian weaponry and (in the case of the Bolivians) the most colourful army in history. WNTL?

For the future, I am keen on fighting the great Italo Franco war of the 1930s.

And then there is the great Argentine invasion of Chile ca 1978. Shermans of all sorts, Mirage IIIs, F-5s, Canberras, naval actions around cape horn WNTL?

And the Timorian war of 1975, or the War of West New Guinea - Aussies versus Indonesians WNTL

I tend to be a bit of a butterfly but what I would consider as my core periods are:

WSS - just a fascinating period.

Macedonions - Alexander, what more can you ask.

Carthage - Hannibal

Napoleonics - although my Peninsula British have not even been unpacked after my last move.

ww2 - North west europe


On top of this are side periods

SYW - new to me (sortof)

ECW

1670 to 1690 across all of europe,

Crecy era HYW

Age of Arthur

ACW

Revolutionary French wars

Add in,

classical fantasy, weird fantasy, SPACE:1959 and science fiction in a couple of forms.

My expansion of periods has been lead by whether I can re-use my terrain. So from WW2 in N. Africa, I moved to late C19th Sudan and the next project for that area is FFL in Morroco. I can use the same mat, wadis etc, for all of them.

Not a little sensible. You could move into NKE & also build an opposing force of Hittites (as I've done) or a very compelling Assyrian army.

Alexandrian Conquest
Punic Wars
Gallic War
Arthurian Period
Viking raids to Norman Conquest
Fantasy
Sci-FI

Periods I enjoy but don't often game/future projects
ECW
SYW
WW2
ACW

I love the classical period to the fall of Rome, I hardly ever venture out of it because of the huge variety of battles in the era. I have role-played as an associate of Falco in Rome, Skirmished with Macro and Cato on the Medway and crushed Porus and his elephants at the Hydaspes with Alexander. All with the added bonus that you can't be called out for having the wrong lace on your drummer.

I fancy doing a Kushite v Egtptian thing. I've already made a Kushite pyramid.
Whether I'll get around to it is another matter.

My terrain would also work for WWI, campaigns against the Turks in Palestine & Mesopotamia.
Maybe even for the Crusades in the Holy Land.

17th Century: TYW era imagi-nations
18th Century: WSS, SYW, imagi-nations, naval
19th Century: 1850-7o, imagi-nations (including colonial), naval

Inter-War: Naval
WW2: NW Europe 44-45 (dormant but BKC4 will get me going again at some point)
Sci-fi: Skirmish

I like the idea of Bronze Age but not tried it
Never tried even starting a Napoleonic collection, couldn't be arsed with the uniforms TBH.
