My question lies with my preparation for a game on the Battle of Hlobane (some time before Christmas).
I have sufficient mounted troops (if I use Lancers & Dragoon Guards) to stage a game where the table is the plateau, the British are on it, at a central Mblini's kraal & the impi enters, forcing the British to flee from two only exits. To slow them down (so it's not just about fleeing) victory points for burning the kraal, taking cattle with them, inflicting casualties on the Zulu etc.
So although I have quite a lot of AZW British, I have only one, higher commander - figure in a patrol jacket & forage cap who will represent Buller. I think there should be extra points for killing leaders, so I need two more.....which is precisely the number of unpainted, mounted figures I have in the Bits Box.
One is a Boer/Colonial. Boots, breeches, plain jacket (ie no braid), cartridge belt & brimmed hat (I have a spare pith helmeted head to substitute, if I need it). How to paint it?
Second is pith helmeted Sudan British officer - booted, jodhpured, jacket but with Sam Brown-like webbing. Carve off the webbing & give it a red coat?
Suggestions for figures 1 & 2 are welcome.

That's rather handy, Donald, thank you.

For the 'Colonial', paint him as A Natal Native Horse officer who seem to have a fairly casual approach to uniform. As to the other, why not just leave the webbing alone? A senior officer also gets a lot of flexibility when it comes to items of uniform. Sudan 1882 or 1898 BTW?
Re: A really good uniform source for the AZW...& a question
When "Sudaning" (pardon the invented present participle), we lean towards the earlier period.
And thanks for the advice. Sound.
I will paint the "Colonial" with stained pith, black coat (+ a little red pin striping), khaki breeches & black boots.
The Regular will keep the Sam Browne ensemble (I found it was rare but not unknown for the AZW), red coat (with various gold lace), dark blue trousers & the whitest of white pith helmets.
