Incidentally, my father's family history contains the snippet that 'we' came second at Culloden. Unfortunately not much more detail, and oral history largely.

Yes, runner up is pretty good for Scottish teams in international competitions.
(I must confess that I interpreted "came second" originally as being one of the Scots on the Government side - ie not losing but still ending up getting screwed.)

Interesting. That's how my ancestors wound up "transported" to America as indentured servants of the Crown for fifteen years--basically white slavery--as Australia had yet to be discovered by the English in 1747.
