ACW Confederate Flags
ACW Confederate Flags
Any one here know of an online source for information about the use of flags by Divisional & Corps commanders? Tried last night but my Google Fu was weak. Any help appreciated.

This might help as a starting point. https://www.pinterest.co.uk/conun/confe ... als-flags/
Unlike the Union army, the Confederates did not devise a regulated system of Brigade, Division or Corps flags, The Army of Northern Virginia HQ had a rather plain flag, with the letters ANV on, for example. The Western Confederates flags were different from the Eastern armies. There are no hard and fast formulas I can give you, but a matter of googling those commanders you are after, but you won't find much in the way of flags for larger formations other than regiments.

Rules? You ask me what rules do I use. No, I don't do rules.
Re: ACW Confederate Flags
I was afraid that was the case. I want to avoid using named commanders: too inflexible. Looks like I'll be using a mixture of cavalry battle flags and the odd National flag(s).
Thanks anyway.

www.Confederateflags.org may help you if you look in the Army section under Secondary flags, which includes information on headquarters and brigade flags at least in the western theatre.
There is no point in being stupid if you don't show it!

Thanks. I had visited this site but missed the section you pointed out. It was helpful and I've now drawn a Cary HQ flag:Penda wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 12:16 am www.Confederateflags.org may help you if you look in the Army section under Secondary flags, which includes information on headquarters and brigade flags at least in the western theatre.
Seems it was used at least 3 or 4 times and copied.
Re: ACW Confederate Flags
I read somewhere that Longstreet's Corps continued to use the old 'Stars & Bars' as HQ flags long after the general introduction of the Battle Flag to the Army of Northern Virginia. I can't reference that though, sorry.

Re: ACW Confederate Flags
My advice is to make it up. Then decide on a realistic size......and double it.
Smashing.

Re: ACW Confederate Flags
Good advice. I gave up on scale flags decades ago. I now just measure the flag pole.
As to the last sentence: resist the urge!
