Ochoin raises a good point. In SA, I never bought Wargames mags, because at R20 to the £ and after postage and import, it just was not value for money. No matter the quality of the articles. And roughly 50% of them would be ‘lost’ by the SA Post office.

Frankly the financial plight of Colonials when it came to prices never entered my head. It should have because I know I'm careful when buying figures from both Eureka and Brigade Games. I ought not to think so Eurocentrically when pipping up about penny/cent pinching! I stand corrected.

I think even a fiver is a lot if there's maybe only one 3 page article in you're likely to be interested in. I can browse a stock of 2nd hand osprey mags in a bookshop in town which are around £5 each so sometimes they don't compare favourably. Especially now they are much more themed, if I like the theme I'll lap it up. If not then I tend to pass.

Ochoin, I've seen the "current" (2 months behind) copy of all 3 mags in local newsagents here in the past fortnight (& bought 2 of them Penda!). Cost is $10-12 each, or 2 expensive coffees! Maybe it's a Brisvegas thing, as I could get them in Townsville too. BG could be found occasionally when in print, but I subscribed to that

Here in Sydney, you won't find them in most suburban news agents, but big one in town, including the big dymocks, stock them. I wqs lucky, out in Hornsby where dad lived, the owner was a military enthusiast. I'd guess Brissie has similar issues and Ocho may not be as lucky as dad was. For those who live in the foggy isles, many Australians don't go to their city centre in a decade.

I suspect we all have our own reasons. I used to buy every copy of MW and then WI in the early years and stopped altogether when I moved to NZ. Part of this was availability but the other cost or value for money in a limited budget setting. In later years when I would return to the UK on holiday I'd be like an alcoholic in a brewery and avidly buy each new issue of MW and WI as they came out and WSS because I had missed them. When I first saw the latter I remember buying loads of old back issues at an UK show because the themes interested me. In later years I would buy WI if I saw it in NZ but gave up when I realised that only a small part of the magazine held my attention. I was excited by Battlegames and subscribed because a much greater portion of the magazine seemed relevant. In the past few years when I've been back in the UK I am more discerning buying a magazine for reasons of its relevant content rather than because it was "Oh look a wargames magazine I haven't seen one in ages"
