Depends on the company, if not Vat registered, they were not charging you vat so could not reduce the order by that. And a lot of UK figures firms were/are well under the vat threshold. By the same token everything they buy as raw materials et al, were bought at vat inclusive prices too.

If they have a vat number, technically.... it is fraud unless they prove they paid it to hmrc.
