Not really my period but I have form.
A few years ago, a pal took up wargaming with 'Great War Spearhead'. I led him to these rules from advice I got from knowledgeable chaps on a wargames' site I no longer visit (TWW). He built some sizeable armies & scratch built some quite impressive trench terrain. We had 5-6 games but unfortunately separated from his wife & lost the figures & terrain in the divorce*.
The lost game (he'd progressed a fair way from this, filling much of the table with trench systems & several hundreds of figures);
However, another pal, with the sentimental attachment to Gallipoli that many Aussies have, has long collected & painted figures of Diggers & Turks. He recently discussed the possibility of actually wargaming with them....from the Gallipoli campaign & maybe into later war Europe (not with the Turks, obviously). He asked me about possible rules.
I didn't really like GWSH, partly because of its scope. We both like Blitzkrieg Commander for WW2 & he wondered if there was anything similar to it for the Great War period - mechanisms, scaling & scope. He has nothing based, no equipment such as artillery etc & no terrain built yet. So - open slather.
Suggestions?

.* He still comes to some of our games but his delight in wargaming has distinctly faded.

Re: WW1 rules
There's no real reason why you couldn't just use BKC to be honest. It already has army lists for the SCW , which was basically fought with WWI era weapons, including many of the tanks, and there are stats around that could be adapted for the rare unit that didn't hang around to the 1930's (eg British tanks). Infantry units in BKC are generic enough to just reuse. There are some items that might need modification but that's been done in the past to change BKC into CWC and FWC without meddling with the rules mechanisms.

Probably not a bad idea. I'll see what else pops up & throw the information to Mal.....his armies, his period, his decision.Etranger wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 2:41 am There's no real reason why you couldn't just use BKC to be honest. Kallistra have a free set which may be worth a look. Although designed for hexes they should be easy to convert.

He needed a better lawyer. Mate of mine was told get out of the house and your armies go in the bin tomorrow. The judge came down on her like a ton of bricks.

You're obviously going somewhat "up-scale" from platoon-sized actions, but I just wanted to add that "Through the mud and the blood" is very good, and Chain of Command has also been adapted to WW1 (not sure what differences there are between the two sets, though).

Thanks. Not "me" though. I think Mal wants, like BKC, re-enforced battalions or a bit bigger. Possibility of tanks, planes & artillery barrages.BaronVonWreckedoften wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 5:32 pm You're obviously going somewhat "up-scale" from platoon-sized actions, but I just wanted to add that "Through the mud and the blood" is very good, and Chain of Command has also been adapted to WW1 (not sure what differences there are between the two sets, though).
I will forward your suggestions to him & he can do the leg work. My "job" may well be, in the fullness of time, to turn up to an exquisitely crafted game that I added nothing to & let him guide me through it. Bliss.
