After many, many years of painting mass armies - several thousands of figures - I've come to the conclusion I really prefer to paint 'one-offs'.
After years of painting French line infantryman after infantryman, It's only painting Napoleon that's fun.
Currently, I have 72 Epirote phalangites to paint : I've finished 12. Sigh. For respite, I've turned to an elephant model. So much more enjoyable.
I'm not saying the serried ranks of Prussian SYW Grenadiers don't look good nor do I deny that gaming large battles isn't a fantastic experience but I'm getting to the stage where I think mass armies are conceivably going to drop off my list of goals.

For the full madness, you want each figure in standing, running, fighting and casualty poses....

You’ve missed the ‘lying down shooting’ pose - which I suspect was quite common in real life. Airfix certainly thought so.
I have tended to go for skirmishy sized games, the sort that Lardy rules are often designed for, 60-80 figures a side. Mainly because I lack the discipline to do one period when I could do them all! But occasionally I do go berserk- having bought the new ECW figures from Bloody Miniatures I went looking through the lead pile for the ECW figures. Oh gods there are a few hundred of them :o I think I went ‘spending spree’ on them in the run up to retirement on the basis that I might not be able to afford such luxuries in the future.

I get lockdown, but I get up again.
