Tax Evasion

Post by Jeremy »

Lardinium, the Jewel of the North. Many say this was Arthur's true home, and that Camelot was merely his little holiday getaway by the sea. It is the end of the season, and Bedivere is returning home with the taxes collected throughout Britannia. He is tired, and it has been a long journey. The end is in sight, and warm food, good ale, and above all, a soft bed await him.

Unfortunately, Cynewulf the Saxon has other ideas, and lays a trap just outside the village of Lardinium. If he is lucky, he can kill two birds with one stone, steal the taxes and slay that snotty pipsqueak Arthur. Then Guinevere will be all his. And all of Britannia of course.
Image
Seeing the trap, Bedivere, with his brave men of Britannia and Merlin by his side charge into Aldwulf and his Saxons whilst cunning Cynwulf creeps round his flank.

A mighty battle ensues and Bedivere's shieldwall is slowly pushed backwards. Fortunately, with almost magical foresight, Arthur had anticipated this and emerged from the fort with his Levy.

Seeing Bedivere bloodily repulsed, Arthur, Excaibur held high, urges the Knights of Camelot on and they charge the Saxons. Fearful carnage ensues and Arthur personally slays Aldwulf, Cynwulfs cousin. The Saxons cry out in dismay and lose heart, Cynewulf is too far away to boost morale and they flee the field in terror. Cynewulf, seeing his cousin slain, and the tide turning against him, retreats. His day will come. Arthur WILL pay......

A fun little game of Dux Britanniarum played virtually yesterday with friends. Probably my favorite period ever and the rules always deliver a Hollywood Big Budget Movie type experience.

Great tactics by John and Charley. Pinned the Saxons with an early charge with Warriors in shield wall. Although outnumbered, casualties were low, but high shock, forcing them back. The Saxons took a few casualties and then Arthur hit them like a sledgehammer

The remainder of the Saxon force were too far away and could only watch in horror as a third of the army routed.

The dominance of the neofascist Romano British, imposing their system of taxation and brutal suppression of Saxon custom on peaceful settlers who ask nothing more than the right to engage in organic farming on previously unoccupied land.

Taxes eh? What do we get from your revenues? Where are the warm baths and sewerage systems for the Saxon community?

Lovely set-up, great scenario and well fought.

I can just see Arthur and Bedivere riding back into the fort together....."And that, my Liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped!"
