Obscure WWII questions for RMD.

Possibly a machine gun battalion? AOS 64 IIRC

Now if it is 60, 61 or 62 I am thinking an Independant Infantry Brigade such as 56th Brigade.

The white/light coloured stripe on the carrier is hard to see, but I can just see it when I blow up the IWM original picture. It doesn't show up on the reproduced copy above.

They are sporting an awful lot of machine guns guns between them, aren't they?

The Lorried Infantry Brigade of an Armoured Division used 60-63 as its serials (on a green square), so it could be one of those. The Divisional MG company used 64 on a black square, so that could be it; perhaps an OP party for the 4.2-inch Mortar Platoon? MG Battalions belonging to Infantry Divisions also used 64 on black.

Regarding the mystery Carrier with the 6X AoS, the positioning of the 6 suggests to me that the second digit has to be a 1, as there wouldn't be room for anything wider. Just a thought.

As for the Sherman behind it. The battery marking above the AoS appears to have the lower-left quadrant coloured, and what looks like RE or RF
Suggesting the Troop commander of E or F troop, I believe?

Yes, E or F Troops would fit with the 3rd Battery (lower left quadrant).

I think those fancy, over-complicated AoS markings of the Royal Artillery were actually a substitute for the fact that they couldn't brand horses anymore.

Nooo, it is a throwback to why orders are never actually obeyed in the british Army.

The Infantry do not understand their orders.
the Cavalry ignore their orders.
The Artillery make their own arrangements.
