I misread the rules & will need a fourth rank to complete the unit, so another 12 figures to go. And 48 more to make a second phalanx which I think is the minimum for a Pyrrhic army. Sigh.
I'm rather pleased with my shed-made pikes. My mother was a professional maker of bombs (to drop on Hitler, I hasten to add), so arms' manufacture must be in the genes.
I sort of recall from one of the episodes of "Rome: Total War" that there was a battle being refought in which hoplites came up against a Roman army. Apparently, the hoplites tried to surrender in the real thing, using the well-known (or so they thought) method of simply elevating their pikes to the vertical and resting on them. The Romans were either unaware of this convention, or chose to ignore it, and just stabbed them all to death.
