Wargames is perhaps not the best example for KS. There have been some brilliant new and innovative games in the roleplaying community that exist because of the KS initiative. They weren’t demanded, but many have had a great impact on the way games are played these days.

My prefered way of buying figures is to drive out to a pituresque village with a nice tea room. Knock on the door of an old cottage, to be answered by a jaded wargames widdow who will tell me, without me needing to even speak "he's in the shed tinkering with his trains." I find my way out past the overgrown shrubery to said shed to find a retired Colonel fiddling with an n gauge steam train who will look up and again without me needing to speak will excitedly ask "have you seen the new Sharpe! Swashbuckling stuff what!" He'll then fumble about a pile of plastic bags for my order while I browse through his small trays of odds and ends figures while we discuss our next projects.

Sadly, these days are not so much possible anymore.

With regards to kickstarters they started well when they kicked off a few years back, especially for boardgames but now I agree with Paul that most are just pre-orders, if there is such a thing? As surely it's just an order as you can't 'pre-order' unless you're just thinking about making the actual order? I wonder what if any legal difference there is in statutory rights when purchasing if thats the difference?

Also agree with Jeremy in that small companies need to be supported. Though there's other ways of doing that in these times of social media etc.

Sorry, it wasn't aimed at you It was for WinCo. because for the majority of wargaming KS projects there is no gamble, the figures are already sculpted, quite often mastered and sometimes even ready to go.

Although I'm clearly in the minority on this I've not actually read anything in the answers that would persuade me to a different stance. I doubt any of the Kickstarter products would be missed in our hobby if they'd not come to the market via others shouldering the risk. We wargamers are suckers for the new and shiny after all.

You've certainly hit the nail on the head here and I have no defence, which in essence is what is leading me to press the button on the Welsh Medieval Kickstarter

It's a very good example like the others you mention too. KS is a very sensible business model for a small company industry. And despite comments on this thread , no one has ever been forced to take part in one.
