First game in months.

Post by Spanner »

Tim Lamont and I got invited over to Mike Broadbent's place for a game today- the first we've had since the lockdowns started again in August. We has a US CAV vs Indians battle using Osprey's The Men Who Would Be Kings and using Mike's 20mm figures. The scenario was the cavalry riding to the rescue of a troop that had been ambushed, and had retreated to a hill for a last stand. We rolled to see who got which forces, and Tim and I ended up as the Indians, while Mike had the CAV.

Mike's dice rolling let him down badly, though. He never won initiative and managed to roll double ones twice- causing a cavalry troop to rout and disperse, and the loss of the leader of another troop. He also wasn't able to bring the relief force on before Indian reinforcements had arrived, and the slightly smaller CAV units (10 vs 12 figures) got pounded by their foes The doomed troop was not rescued- the three troops riding to rescue them being decisively defeated by their enemies.

A quick, fun game it was also a good chance for us to catch up. Sorry for the photo quality- my old phone was all I had with me.

I confess to being a John Wayne fan (old right wing ratbag that he was) and films such as 'The Searchers', 'Stagecoach' & the cavalry trilogy are still worth watching.

I think you've picked a great period & a great set of rules for 'breaking the drought'. The Indians beating the "Long Knives" is a bonus!

Funnily enough I saw some of a documentary about him yesterday, and despite all the Commie-hating right-wingism, it reminded me that I always liked him in his movies. Let's face it, any decent wild west skirmish game is going to have a Wayne-based character in it.

G'day, gents.

I don't mind some of his movies, but he's not an actor who'll get me to watch a movie. I'll admit I've not dabbled in the "Plains Wars" or whatever the genre is called, so it was all new to me. I do know it was an easy-to-pick-up set of rules, an interesting scenario and a very enjoyable game (though Lady Luck's assistance was a bit over-done).

What surprised me is that nobody's picked up the range. It's got Mike's usual detail and animation, so the figures looked good. But for some reason nobody seems interested in 20mm US Cavalry and Indians.

Next up is US ACW riverine warfare- a period I have liked ever since Yaquinto published "Ironclads" in the 80's. Hopefully Mike's dice will be kinder to him next time.

Cheers.

Dal.

That looks like a fun game. We played something similar at the last Ayton with Tim's (aquired from Ian) collection of Foundry Pony Wars figures.

I've kicked the tires on 20mm Western when I saw the lovely 20mm plastic options available.

How did you find MWWBK? I've heard mixed reviews. Have a copy but not played anything.

It's odd but there are some ranges/periods that will resolutely refuse to budge off the shelves if they're the wrong scale/size for some strange reason. Some sizes are just "right" for the period, some are not. Unless you are a 20mm afficionado, like ochoin and Essex Boy, I suspect that 20mm ECW or SYW would be equally "niche" (ie almost unsellable).

Does "afficionado" mean one-eyed lunatic? If so, I resemble that remark.

I could add that my beloved ECW & SYW armies aren't for sale even if there was someone interested.
Which, as you correctly claim, is as unlikely as ex-Pres. Trump re-joining the human race.

I wouldnt turn down 20mm ECW. In fact I almost regret starting it in 15mm.

On this forum, most nouns and adjectives are merely a polite form of one eyed lunatic.

Great looking game Spanner. An urge to do plains wars is one of my dirty little secrets.
