Somewhere in the new shed is the extensive building project that was going to be a Spanish or Southern Italian village. Now shelved... literally. I think I was put off because to have the right feel, it had to be elevated, and that meant fixed basing. Which I didn't want to do.

The trick to that is to make a base with 'paved' building footprints, so you can vary what goes where even if the road and square stays the same. That you can build a couple of layers of elevatation on.

Thanks Fredd, I did think of something like that, but the appeal to me of an elevated village is the slopes built into the houses so that ground level is first floor at the rear and so on. I shall give it some more thought. I have neither the patience or the storage to do two sets of buildings for the flat and the sloping...

It is the trouble with it, you are starting to get into specific, rather than generic. For what you have described, a removable basement/slope level, with a building you could place on top or on a flat surface?

Also, for most skirmish games, the ground scale is such that terrain doesn’t change dramatically over the size of the table and can probably be done with a few books and Boardgame boxes over cloths.
