What's on your workbench?
Re: What's on your workbench?
I've been using contrast paints over zenithal priming on my Indian Mutiny stuff and I'm very happy with them. The flesh and red especially work well.
Re: What's on your workbench?
It really depends on which colour of CP. The weakness in the range is the variance in coverage from colour to colour. Some are washed out and some are very saturated, some cover smoothly and others are blothcy (especially on flatter surfaces).
The browns, black, reds and blues are very good the greens, greys and white less so.
I might well pick up some of the AP greens as they seem to be very good although I haven't tried the Scale 75 Instant colour yet, beyond one of the yellows which is really good.
Re: What's on your workbench?
I think the whole 'contrast paint' introduction to the market was fantastic for those who weren't as confident at painting (like me).
Totally agree that some are certainly better than others, although I think the most useful is the White, for so easily adding some definition to a basic white. I've also used it to really lighten colours, by applying it over a dried previous layer...especially red and blue.
It'll be really interesting to see how these new AP ones cover when a 'non-pro-painter' uses them. Thanks to Jeremy for the link, as it just shows the potentially big differences depending on the colour of the base coat colour.
Needles to say, the Mega Box is on my birthday list for April!!! Haha

Having seen your Romans in the flesh I have absolutely no idea why you have no confidence in your painting.Jamanicus wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 8:30 am I think the whole 'contrast paint' introduction to the market was fantastic for those who weren't as confident at painting (like me).

Rules? You ask me what rules do I use. No, I don't do rules.

Very much so, mind you it was a table that groaned with wargamery goodness.

Very interested in the contrast paints and have been eyeing up the AP set on North Star. If Jaimie did his Romans with it I'm sold!
Re: What's on your workbench?
Yeah, it worked really well on the Ultramarine Blue to make it much lighter/paler...used it on my blue tunic'd Roman Auxiliaries to tone down the deep blueness and it really gave almost a sun-bleached effect

Those were a real grind, but I really actually enjoyed painting to the deadline of Ayton!!
I certainly need that 'target' to get over my 'finikitiness' (not a word, but I'm sure people know what I mean) about my painting being as perfect and neat as possible!! Don't get me wrong, I want them neat, but it's taught me not to sweat the small stuff and that in a formation/on the table, you can't see those little tiny errors!! Haha
