The Ayton 2023 Colonial Thread, Friday 28th-30th April.

Post by Tim Hall »

As promised this is the thread in which we deal with the logistics of the Colonial Adventures proposed for the Ayton gathering in in 2023.

As stated elsewhere, I plan to deal with terrain issues, and Gary has kindly agreed to co-ordinate forces, although I expect we will both be doing plenty of each.

The rules to be used will be "The Men Who Would Be Kings", using the force/unit details therein as the template. The only difference being that players will be allowed a points total of 30, instead of 24.

The Adventure will be entitled "Up The Wazoo", and set in the mysterious region of Khandibhar, located on the Dark Continent. So I look forward to plenty of confectionary themed puns etc. I like to think that Gary and I are tolerant and enlightened guys, but no weird stuff will be allowed. I thought I'd get that in from the off. No airships, Massive (or small) tunnelling machines, steam tanks, Tesla electro cannon or other steampunk shenanigans, bizarre animal enquiries will be looked on with a degree of disdain unless they amuse me.

Your forces can be historical, namely within the setting of 1860-1880, and weaponry must also reflect this. As I said think decent rifled muskets up to Martini Henry style breech loaders, same goes for artillery.

Thank you.

Repeated for clarity.

Regular Infantry at 6 pts. Consisting of 12 figures including a leader.

Mounted Infantry at 4 pts. Consisting of 8 figures, including a leader (NB these are not "cavalry" and will fight dismounted.)

Regular Cavalry at 6 pts. Consisting of 8 figures including a leader.

Irregular Infantry at 4 pts. Consisting of 12 figures including a leader.

Irregular Cavalry at 4 pts. Consisting of 8 figures including a leader.

Tribal Infantry at 3 pts. Consisting of 16 figures including a leader.

Tribal Cavalry at 3 pts. Consisting of 10 figures including a leader.

One gun/crewed weapon at 6 pts (well drilled) and 4 pts (poorly drilled). Consisting of one gun/machine gun and up to 4 crew plus leader.

Players could also field a force commander at no additional cost. This would as act as a representation of you. So, amusing character names will be welcome.

The points allowance will be raised to 30 points and no more. I think this will allow a fairly flexible field force without too much expense, or hopefully built using existing troops. Basing I leave to you. Multiple based figures don't seem to be a problem, although the rules are aimed at individually based figures. But I see no need for the nightmare of re-basing.

Any ship can be an airship if you chuck it far enough though.

I have one idea that, whilst wholly within the spirit and technology used at the time may be a little bit outside of the stated "Rules of Logistics" :D

Serious question as they are available to my force, can we field elephants?

Major Cormac McCaramac will be supporting the Last King of Kumbahyah Cheif N'em Inem in a mixed force of tribal warriors and well drilled troops from the East Bongo Company a subsiduary of Terry's Chocolate of York.

All right, the puns are amusing, but you lost brownie points with the spelling. An elephant will cost you 10 points, with a crew of 3 and a mahout at 2 points extra. But I will have to work out some stats for it. No mumakil though, it must be of a realistic and proportionate size to 28mm figures.
