With only a week or so to go before many weeks of holidays, I thought I should really try to knock over my Lion Rampant force.
I was given a pile of figures and have, so far, painted 12 archers, 12 crossbowmen, 12 spearmen (heavy infantry). 3 units @ 12 points. Probably too many missile troops?
I have - unpainted - 6 skirmishers, 12 knights (elite) and a rather odd 12 foot figures in padded jacks with sword & shield which don't seem to fit any LR category.
I could happily buy figures for any of the other categories in LR.
So, what might be the composition of a reasonably successful LR retinue? I am, BTW, building a generic medieval European force.
It should be possible to get some initial games in, post-Christmas. Winning is not a priority but being competitive in a wargame (not the same thing though it can end in victory, of course) is important.

What makes a good Lion Rampant retinue?
Re: What makes a good Lion Rampant retinue?
One of the strengths of LR is that there are no super units so most armies can be competitive.
You have
2 x Elite Mounted @ 6 pts each
1 x Heavy Infantry @ 4pts
1 x XBow @ 4 pts
1 x Bow @ 4pts
1 x Skirmishers @ 2 Pts
and the Guys in padded jack with swords and shields I would either use as:
1 x Heavy Infantry "veteran" @ 6pts
or
1 x Light Infantry "veteran" @ 5pts
A decent balanced 24pt force, from your available figures, would be
1 x Mounted Elite
1 x Bow or Xbow (With "veteran" for bows or "pavises" for Xbow)
1 x Heavy Infantry
1 x Heavy Infantry "veterans"
1 x Skirmishers
This would leave you enough to start a second retinue. If you want to buy more units i'd get some more Heavy Infantry, some Light Infantry and maybe a unit of Levy. Depending on your preferences it may also be worth getting a 4pt cavalry unit for variety.
For an uber Offensive Elite force:
2 x Mounted Elite
1 x Heavy Infantry "Bloodthirsty"
1 x light infantry "Veterans"
For a more Defensive Army:
1 x Xbow "Pavises"
1 x Bow "Veterans"
1 x Heavy Infantry
1 x Heavy Infantry "veterans"
1 x Skirmishers
What's "good" depends on how you like to play and the scenario being used and you have a good variety to give some options for a single retinue.
