Would it not make sense to determine ‘sides’? It would also help people decide what to build. Could be problematic if we had 10 European players and two local players.

I agree. I'm supposed to have done that with Tim by now, but I've had such a sh*t year health-wise that wargaming has not really been foremost in my thoughts.
Although something asymmetric with lots of Colonial powers against vast hordes of natives is what we're envisaging - I think.
