While we are on the subject of shields. Does anyone know of a good reference for simplified hoplite shield patterns to copy for freehand painting? I know you can get transfers but I'd prefer to paint.

I agree with Andy on this one. Stick it on the figure first.
Interesting other methods though.
Has anyone tried making their own transfers? I think Donald dabbled once.

Tried it with my laser printer in Chile. It's quite easy unless you are printing white.

I just stick them to the figure and be done with it...
That’s generally what I do

Jeez Zen! Do you have sex upside down on a rocking horse, just because you can?
No but I am getting in stocks of ibuprofen to give that a go this weekend...

I avoid the problem by ignoring periods that (a) have shields, and (b) don't have muskets.

What an excellent idea!

Double sided sellotape on a piece of card. Or blobs of blue tac.
This.
Paint and varnish reverse side first so that if the blu tac lifts any paint, when you're doing the front, it's probably not visible once on the figure.

Doesn't the WRG reference book have a load of shield designs? I'm going from memory.........
