I don't think we ever based a fleet there, but it is no longer vital for repairing damage to ships rounding the horn. Big container port, ships more fruit thqan any other port in the world. Great naval museum and the Museum in Bernardo O'Higgin's house is wonderful, good restaurant between the cable car and Bernardo's house.
Also Chile's highest incidence of HIV.

If you are visiting in summer, see the Victorian era waterfront buildings, visit the museums and save the shagging till you hit La Serena (4-5 hours by bus) lower HIV and crawling with Argie students who left their friends and inhibitions behind when they came to Chile.
