I like Ancients rules that allow you to field big damn hero types within a big damn army. TSS and WAB both cater for this in different ways...not sure about the others mentioned.

Any scale, any basing as long as frontages are equal.
Mi amigo Lawrence plays them & has a very high opinion of them.

I’m sure EB can write a version if there isn’t.

Last night I browsed through Hail Caesar, WHAB and Impetus (other ancient period rules are available.....and I probably have them) and, apart from all of them having a peculiar notion about pikes...........[leave it]......, they all seem pretty good.
My own experience of the WRG ancients was rather unpleasant but it seems lots of people still play them, or look back with fond memories. Although, I've never heard a good word said about the edition 'whose name should not be spoken'.
Sixth edition?
Doh!

Sixth was good. It was seventh that became bonkers. None of them allow pikes to be skirmishers unfortunately.
For an Ayton type of event you need everyone to be able to pick up the rules quickly and for basing not to be too important. I think that means WRG wouldn’t work well - good as they are,

I loved WRG 7th before competition play broke them. I suspect for Ayton that something like Ancients Rampant would be best. HC though is quick to pick up

Pikes, skirmishing, what a novel idea. Never did get this pointy stick thing.

7th. Right-oh. Ta.
'Skirmishing pikes'. I'm trying really hard to ignore you.
A good, and well made, point about the WRG basing.

Please don't encourage him, Grizzle.
