Kicking the tires on a new period.

Post by tim.w »

Mulling over starting an ancients project once I clear some lead pile, just undercoated my WW2 French this afternoon and done some more work on the Saga warbands.

Tempted by Victrix Late Imperial Romans at the minute, their Cavalry should be out soon. Or even Republican? Always fancied some Old School Hinchliffe Ancients too.

Was wondering if anyone has played Hail Ceasar and what's the smallest number of units a game would work with? Would very likely use Neil Thomas's rules too.

Only mulling still, you understand!

It’s not the best set and not the worst. 4 units of foot and 2 or 3 units of cav. Infantry are typically 16 to 36 figures in size, cavalry are 12. Next years plan is to finish my Carthaginians and Gauls

Be interested to know what sets folk have tried. I imagine its hard to make a decent set. Especially one that can cover such a wide period.

I quite like impetus. And the basing system lends itself nicely to dioramas

I like, To the Strongest, but I know the grid and playing cards is not everyones cup of tea, but I find it plays fast and smooth and little gamesmanship is possible, no more, failed to connect by 0.5mm sorry olf bean type discussions.

im going to be using WHFB/WAB for my old school ancients. I like the saving throws and single figures and heroic leaders.

To The Strongest is a great set of rules for big battle and a good realistic but playable feeling.

I like Hail Caesar, but the command and control mechanisms grate with many. It shares many ideas with Black Powder but it's better thought out and has some interesting and clever combat mechanics. I've been playing a lot of Impetus lately and it has plenty of good points, although basic Impetus isn't so great - too many over-simplifications for my taste. I used to play a lot of DBM/DBMM but now they make my head hurt.
Why us? Cos we're 'ere lad, nobody else.

Let's have a chat at Framlingham. There are a few of us looking to ancients at the moment.

Agree with Gary. You have to play the full version of Impetus. My mates in SA tell that their Baroque is equally good

Speak for yourself; I like to think of myself as gracefully middle aged!
