Deployment

Post by ochoin »

How to get your troops on the table: this is not a problem when re-creating historical battles (they usually start in pre-assigned positions) but offers possibilities in 'what-ifs'.

I quite favour the FoG method for most periods: dice for initiative, then in turn place a set number of units on the table till all are placed.

However, an American pal of mine (a fellow 1/72 SYW enthusiast) has gone back to an old Don Featherstone method - the blind.

Next year, I'm going to use this, probably in an Ancients game. I'm looking forward to seeing my pals' faces when they turn up & see a table with a blind on it.

Behave yourself.
Rules? You ask me what rules do I use. No, I don't do rules.

Yes, all well and good until the "blind" falls over and crushes the figures. And then someone loses an eye.....

Yes. It does look a bit gimcrack (with respect to my pal).

If I do use a blind, I'll need to think out a frame & maybe cloth?

I like blinds in a game. Instead of a board hiding your troops, why not use pieces of paper representing the footprint of several units of troops. You can have some dummy blinds too? Have a look at the old TFL rules like IABSM, Mud and Blood, etc for idea.

I see what your saying, Jeremy, & obviously it would work - probably better than lumps of cardboard. But i like the drama of the thing. the look of the thing.
It’s the vibe of it. It’s the Constitution. It’s Mabo. It’s justice. It’s law. It’s the vibe.
