Good question, mate. Because everyone else was using dark blue and they wanted to stand out from the Royal Artillery's dark blue? Steel blue only required three dips in the dye, not seven, so was cheaper? George II was channeling Liberace?I wonder why they didn't use dark blue (to cover up the dirt) like everyone else?
