Pavises

Evidently, my 12 individually based crossbowmen (for Lion Rampant) would benefit from having pavises.
These, I've discovered, are large, self standing shields. They look not unlike modern riot-squad shields to me.

Easy to make? Easier to buy?? The figs are 25mm- 1/72 scale Tumbling Dice figures. Not sure that an exact size would be a deal breaker but how high should they be? Also, it's very hard to work out how they stand - do they have a back like an artist's easel? There seems to be a lean on them.

For the Medieval period and earlier they'd most likely have a Pavisier whose jobs were to carry it and hold it up! They did sometimes have a large spike on the bottom (The Pavises not the Pavisiers) for sticking in the ground and holding them up. I don't think stands came about until later but are sometimes shown on illustrations for earlier periods especially with Pavises towards the smaller end of the "market". Where shown these are just like a simple stay or prop, usually at around 45 degrees and joining the shield around the mid point.

If you can't find any suitable crouching figures or even actual Pavisiers i'd just go for gluing a rectangular Pavise in a vertical or near vertical position on it's own base (one for each Xbowman) so that you can use them or not as the list demands. Just pretend that the Pavisier has hammered it in using the spike then gone somewhere safer.

The only really consistent things about them are that they are big enough for a man to crouch behind safely and generally rectangular and slightly convex so that they provide a bit of side protection too.

They would be easy to make, just a rectangle of card or plastic bent slightly. They were generally covered and without bosses etc...but did come in variety of sizes and shapes so you can't get it wrong really, so long as it looks like they're big enough to hide behind.

I use cocktail sticks and thin card / balsa wood to make pavies, then paint them wood colour. Stain with ink and then I glue on printed shield designs on the front of the pavise.
