Red Helmet action!

Post by Norman D. Landings »

Question: red stars on Soviet steel helmets in WWII... how common was this practice?
And did it denote particular arms or units?

Cheers gents!

I think the Germans thought of it more as an aiming point.....

A quick look through pictures suggests that they were rare but not unknown. Outside of parades, there don't seem to be pictures of units consistently using them. I suspect that the Russians rapidly accepted the Barons/Germans point of view and painted them out. https://stalingradfront.com/articles/ar ... elmet-ww2/

Cheers gents, that pretty much rules them out for the rank & file.

Now I'm torn between using them for a rookie (too green to know better) unit, or a guard (bags o' swank) unit.
