Question: red stars on Soviet steel helmets in WWII... how common was this practice?
And did it denote particular arms or units?

I think the Germans thought of it more as an aiming point.....

A quick look through pictures suggests that they were rare but not unknown. Outside of parades, there don't seem to be pictures of units consistently using them. Cheers gents, that pretty much rules them out for the rank & file.

Now I'm torn between using them for a rookie (too green to know better) unit, or a guard (bags o' swank) unit.
