Leopard skin shabraques

As it turns out, I have 3 horses on the painting table, needing leopard(?) skin shabraques - 2 Successor generals & a Napoleonic French general.

Tips? Painting guides? Threats from environmental groups?*

Beige or sand all over, the small black dots, then mid brown into the dots, best done with a wet palatte so they feather and bleed into each other slightly.

The outer edge of the skin will be much lighter, and have less spots. The 'spotting' gets more dense towards the backbone.

The method from the foundry guide. Never tried it myself but here it is

That's very similar to what I've done in the past, but the other way round to start with........i.e. I'd start with the palest colour first and work up to dark. Then do the spots (or stripes if it's a tiger).

Why paint the brown spots first, then outline them in black? Wouldn't it be easier to do a black blob and then paint the brown one into it?

I think that's the way I did it.....in my warped and strangely assembled mind, the 'black' is less of an outline of the spot, rather dots around the spot.

Although, I could also be missing something......?
