On another thread penda jested "6mm? Might as well play a boardgame! ". I thought about it for a moment and decided that in many "new" wargames rules, that's exactly what we are doing. It's happening independantly of scale and stems from the no figure removal and the base as a unit rather than individual figures, DBM and it's like began the trend and many sets now use bases and indeed the base width as units of measurement. In later years we are moving even closer towards the boardgame style with the introduction of squared or hexed table systems (to the strongest and C&C spring to mind.). IMHO I think it's a good move . I enjoyed cardboard gaming as much as figures and to see the line between the two becoming blurred is a fine thing as it makes it easier to introduce "boardgame" mechanisms into figure games and vice versa.. Anyone else got an opinion or even care..

They've never really taken off but have you seen the top down 2D counter board games, which basically look like a birds eye view of a miniatures game? The one popular exception is Heroes of Normandy.
I pretty much like anything. I've seen some stunning 6mm games but for me personally I don't really go below 20mm, unless we're talking tanks/ships etc. I have in the past but I prefer to work with individual characters, I'm a toy soldier player at heart.
I was always intrigued by (and still have) all but one of the sets issued for System 7, with cut-out counters (properly coloured with coat and facing tones) in company/squadron sub-units. So called because the footprint equated to 7mm figures.

You can make any scale work like a boardgame. I think the question is do you want to decorate the base with some magnificent military miniatures - where a battalion looks like a colour party, or do you want to make that battalion look, at least like a company, albeit at the expense of individual pieces of art.
As I can't do much more detail on a Historex kit than I do on 6mm, my choice was obvious.
I've never had a problem using the mechanisms from boardgames, but I have a massive problem with using pieces of cardboard as troops. If it doesn't have models it's not a wargame. I suppose I'm a figure snob.
