2020 Show game: ACW

Post by ochoin »

Our little group have run a game at the local Train & Hobby Show for 12 years now.
It provides focus for the year's activities (which will, however, include other games) and we do look forward to the 2 days of gaming, interacting with the crowds etc.

Our 'Oldest Member' is an ACW-nut. He has literally thousands of unpainted figures, has visited Gettysburg & other Civil War battlefields, has the library etc. He's always hesitated because it "has to be perfect". We're going to try to do the ACW next year. The OM is our 'terrain guy' & he wants to totally revamp all he's done, build kilometres of fencing, period houses + contribute more than half the figures: 1000+

TBH it may be more than he can chew but we'll see.

We've scrapped up a few hundred figures between us & had one, preliminary, small game, using 'Pickett's Charge' rules, earlier this year.

Some photos from that game:

Two important questions here:-

1) Is it like Count Andy's ACW collection, where it's actually just one figure photo-shopped a multiplicity of times?

2) Which blue(s) do you use?

1) No no no no no....no no no....no
2) a range of Vallejo ones: primarily Prussian Blue (I was very tempted to write "Stevie Ray Vaughan" but that's too childish even for me).

I'm a big fan of your games, Donald. Your friend may have set himself a very stretching target, but the end result will look awesome I'm sure.

Great pictures.

What's your opinion of Pickett's Charge?

Thank you, Iain.

As you know, PC is also from the same stable as the General d'Armee Napoleonic rules, which I very much like. Thus the similar mechanisms meet my approval. I'm not very knowledgeable about the ACW so I'm not the person to ask about historical accuracy. Our 'Oldest Member' referred to in the OP, is a bit of an expert & he approves of the rules. He prefers Fire & Fury (both Brigade & Regimental rules) but is happy enough with PC.

I believe that the rules named & several other rule sets are generally perceived as being Orl Right by the cognoscenti. So I guess you takes your pick.

If you're happy, Donald, then I'm sure I would be also.

I've got a 10mm ACW game planned for next June and I'm wondering about perhaps trying PC.

That's a great set up Donald, are they 20mms or 28s?
Another vote for PC from me

Challenging deadlines are quite helpful in getting things done 8-)
And if he prefers F&F he is clearly a man of perfect judgement.

As others have said, very nice table.

And good choice of rules.
