RAF Painting Guide

OK, being a sucker for punishment, I've got a Fairey Battle to paint for my 15mm BEF army.

Question being....what colours to paint it? Now I know black underside and dark green/ dark brown but really need coat d'arms, army painter or vallejo colours to go for.

Got any equivalents for smoke & flames? My admiration for the guys who flew Battles into action knows no bounds, not so much for those who authorised the development. The Battle first flew in 1936, two years earlier the Germans flew the Do. 17. Did no-one read the signs?

I know I use Vallejo English Uniform for RAF dark earth but I can't remember which green I use. I think it may be Russian Green.

My 6mm H&R is painted using revell paints.
36182 Dark Earth
36168 Dark Green
36108 Black
They are pretty accurate colours.

It wasn't that much worse than the Stuka. But trying to bomb well defended bridges was always going to end in tears.

Bristol did (Blenheim series, much the same performance & capacity as the Dornier), the Air Ministry didn't.

The Battle did have the same bomb load as the Flying Pencil and was faster though.... and considerably more combat range.

So I suspect the problem was tactical use as much as anything.

The whole air battle of France was a bit of a shambles, like the ground war, too much tokenism, not enough in the way of clear and simple objectives combined with doctrine and hardware to achieve those objectives. Maybe if fighters had hit the target 30 seconds earlier with strafing light bombs and other supression, but well coordinated attacks were not part of the doctrine of the time.
