Tolkeins dwarves definitely had a weegie mentality, somewhat exaggerated in the filums. CS Lewises dwarves, fighting both sides at the end of the world, definitely had a bit of the Russians in them.

I always think of Dwarves as small Norwegians; dour, heavy-drinking people who can be your best mate but still give you a good shoeing "for fun".
