Stripping

Post by tim.w »

Best way to strip the paint from a resin tank, it may have coats of matt cote on it too so not sure how far it'll work?

I normally recommend Dettol, but I've never used it on resin, only metals and plastics.

Whatever you use, slosh it on the underside to see if it reacts. Dettol is an alcohol so it probably won't damage the resin, but test anyway.

Try Isopropyl alcohol. It's fine on cured resin as it's what most folks use for cleaning uncured resin from their prints.

I suspect that the active ingredient in Dettol may not be very different from isopropyl alcohol.

Dettol is generally reported as fine for resin though I haven’t tried it myself. There are some reports that it makes finecast go slightly rubbery until they dry out. Not sure if that’s true but your tank won’t be finecast which is a bizarre material. For normal resin it seems to be ok.

Isoprop will strip nicely if you have only used acrylic paint. If you’ve got enamel or poly varnish you’ll need dettol to cut through it.

This is a much less interesting thread than promised by the title...

Frankly, given the title, its unheard of for us to remain "on topic" this long.......
