I've been buying less and less at shows. I do like to buy SOMETHING to support the traders. Often I will pre-order... I do like to spend time chatting to mates and traders. The social side is important now...
I see very little on B&Bs that I want. I'm often tempted but to be honest I can get better deals on eBay if needed... And my list of saved searches on eBay is now down to about 4-6...
Re the blog post... Things are easier now. And it's a good thing. But you can do stuff anyway you please. Just because things are easy doesn't mean you have to take the easy option. Just look at EB...
I probably only go to 2 or 3 shows per year now - time was, I'd go to every one within a 200 mile radius!
I very rarely buy figures at shows, unless I've pre-ordered in bulk to save postage. Most frequent purchases are 2nd hand books, rulebooks if any catch my eye, or the occasional piece of nice scenery. Gone are the days of 'oooh, shiny' and a new project starts. Last time that happened was when I bought a few AZW Brits from Empress . . . . .
I think it may be just show 'burn out' Basement Mark went with me to Vappa and was astounded by the variety and volume of traders. The last time he went to a show was when we did our display games, so about 2008 I think?
He bought some stuff for Gangs of Rome,and has already finished painting it all!

And the idea that you couldn’t buy painted figures 20 years ago is fairly laughable, that’s 1998 and coincides with my heaviest investment in pro-painted.
I remember them. They were using the student population of Southend as piece workers or so I was told. The ones I saw (never bought any)were a standard block paint job.
I can also remember seeing impossibly well painted and very expensive figures for sale in Shepherd market and Hamleys in the late 50's/early 60's I think.
They were very different to the Britains and Timpo types more generally available then in both size and quality.

Possibly 'Tradition' who sold painted versions of their 54mm figures at Hamleys at one point IIRC. They did so in the 70's.

I had some of their Vikings, neat block painting and an all over brown wash to add shading etc...
Not too bad considering some of the tat that's sold pre painted today.
