Even the mainstream rules that are considered reasonably complex these days would be considered very simple by comparison with 70s and 80s sets. General d Armee is a lot simpler than Empire.

The all-time "mind-blender" ruleset has to be "Chef de Bataillon" in which you commanded a full battalion at 1:1. From memory, it even had a table to resolve a sapper/sapeur taking an axe to a door.
