mdf base, hole for die to sit in, then 4 vertical struts to hold it in place, but space between them to lift said die out to change number

Or just put the dice on the table behind the unit?

i think the issue is that they easily get knocked off the number. Imagine the amount of cheating that would happen if EB was playing.

My main gripe would be having loads of garish D20s cluttering up the table. But thats my personal aesthetic.

Blob of Green Stuff or Das Clay on a tiddly wink or similar and push the D10 in to your preferred depth. Remove when dry.

And straight away you reveal that you'll use a d10 rather than a d20 to record up to 20 casualties

This is probably the most sensible approach and the stand can be made or textured to whatever shape you want. (I'd go with green stuff or equivalent as Das can shrink when drying.)

Thanks for the ingenious suggestions.

The problem, looking for a solution, is recording casualties on units of 16-24 figures - mounted on bases of 4 - without figure removal.

I've made dice holders for 2 standard 12mm dice years ago - card, matches & flocking.
So:

Red dice = whole bases of casualties, white dice = singles.

So the above sample = 9 casualties.

Sorry to have wasted your time.
