I lived 14 miles away so was always stocked. Never found wargame stuff though

They also had a shop in London, just up from Trafalgar Square (and just around the corner from Motor Books). A bit pricier than H-o-W, but still got some very rare AWI books in there for decent prices.

For new books I love Foyles on Charing Cross Road, London. The Osprey section has every Osprey in print, with all the wargames rules they do.

We've a decent shop in York for 2nd hand on Walmgate but other than that its charity shops. Barter Books in Northumberland is rubbish for military history, which I'm always surprised about. I still keep going when I'm there in the hope of finding a gem. They do tend to have toy soldier and Airfix books in their hobby section.

Reading is so overrated. It’ll never catch on. If Netflix haven’t done it, it’s not worth watching

I've had two walking holidays in Hay. I believe that at the end of each, we just about managed to squeeze the luggage into the car round all the books we bought.

Marvellous place - but expensive.

Book One - Charge. The best book ever written. And it still smells great.
Book Two - 1815: The Armies at Waterloo, Ugo Pericoli. A truly awesome book.
Book Three - European Weapons & Warfare 1618 - 1648, Eduard Wagner. Wonderful illustrations.
Book Four - Firepower (with a crafty friend), Major General B P Hughes. Proved to be a bit of an eye-opener.
Book Five - Uniforms of the Seven Years War, Greenwood & Ball. Couldn't believe my luck when these came out.
Book Six - Military Uniforms of the World, Blandford. I could only dream of having armies in these uniforms. Now I can.
Book Seven - The Face of Battle, Keegan. Another eye-opener.

The only bookshop nearby here seems to look at prices on Amazon and then add a tenner.
No thanks.
Although I suppose they are paying tax, probably.

Highly recommended, possibly the best book on military history? Certainly in the top three.
Two thirds of my books went to Dave Lanchester when I was moving. He might still have that one left.
