How I wished that didn't have a ring of truth to it.

I tried to get my daughter to use them as nail varnish. For some reason, she wasn't interested.

Lovely shiny new paints now in the paint box - old stuff dispatched to storage to quietly congeal.
Like David Bowie at the end of “The Hunger”.

Have you got that dark green you painted all your moderns with?

I thought it was about marriage 8-)
There are few subjects about which I know so little but, yes, always kick the old out before you take up with the new.

Your old ones should be relegated to a dark corner, there to be forgotten about for about 5 years or so, until you find them, use them, & decide that they are better than your new ones.

Repeat with current new ones.

So true.

We're talking paint, right?

Surely with women, you let them fight each other to a sweaty, unclothed stalemate, then make a magnanimous offer allowing them to share you?
